"A potentially revolutionary product": a contraceptive pill for men soon to be marketed?

Finally? A male contraceptive pill is to enter a new clinical trial, after a previous one showed promising results.

Dubbed YCT-529, the pill works by inhibiting sperm production through the retinoic acid receptor alpha, which plays a key role in the formation of reproductive cells.

The company behind this research, YourChoice Therapeutics, published the results of its studies on July 22 on the Communications Medicine website.

A hormone-free pill

The latter studied a sample of 16 men, each of whom took the pill for periods ranging from 28 to 90 days, at a rate of one tablet per day, on an empty stomach or after a meal.

No adverse effects were observed. Another advantage is that this pill is hormone-free.

Animal tests, including rats, dogs, and monkeys, have previously shown an efficacy rate close to 100%. The pill's effect is also reversible, with a return to fertility within four to six weeks.

On the market from 2029?

The American firm must now begin a large-scale trial, an essential step leading to potential commercialization.

" It's a potentially revolutionary product ," said Akash Bakshi, president of the American company YourChoice Therapeutics, quoted by Le Parisien .

According to the daily, the pill could arrive in pharmacies from 2029, 70 years after the first contraceptive molecule for women.
